When Erica's husband Joel dies in a tragic accident nobody suspects she had anything to do with it. But appearances can be deceptive.

Erica describes her successful, lawyer husband as handsome and charismatic when she recounts their whirlwind marriage. But nothing is what it seems.

What is Erica hiding?

Was Joel’s death really an accident?

Sometimes the truth can be ugly.

"A twisty suspenseful read that examines what goes on behind closed doors" Betsy Reavley, best-selling author of The Optician's Wife, The Quiet Ones and Frailty

Beautiful Liar is a powerful suspense thriller by best-selling author, Louise Mullins. It's the perfect read for fans of authors like Louise Jensen, Lisa Hall, Rachel Abbott and Kathryn Croft.

Beautiful Liar Louise Mullins 9780995692626 Books

Beautiful Liar is a very difficult read at times, Louise Mullins has touched on a subject that is often hidden behind the heartbreak of a smile, this is the reality of life after marriage for Erica, the shock of the first slap, putting up a facade because you are to frightened to admit to family or friends the abuse that your 'adoring ' husband inflicts on you, and the enjoyment he derives from his cruelty. Welcome to Erica's life , who before she met Joel was an independent confident woman. The opening pages pull you right in, as the story is related by both Erica and Joel, there is an accident in Joel's garage, and we hear from him how this happened, and he is angry, the story we hear in flashback from both sides and learn of the events that lead to his death. It is the story of Erica slowly being worn down, being manipulated and not seeing it at first, why would you? when the same person has pursued you declaring their love for you, lighting up your world. This is so well written, at times very dark in it's detail of domestic abuse , it is not an easy subject matter and I think the author has handled the story very well. Erica and Rose's characters are very believable, Rose is the supportive friend and I liked her very much, I was absolutely gripped with the plot, where Erica and Joel were taking us, their views and thoughts on what led to ' the accident ' and the one thing that we do learn is just what a despicable man Joel was, truly awful, I found nothing to like about him at all. This is one psychological thriller, that is full of suspense, it will keep you turning the page, with the need to learn the truth, because nothing is really as it seems....or is it?. I can't wait to read more from Louise Mullins.

Beautiful Liar Louise Mullins 9780995692626 Books Reviews

Mullins' Novel is an uneasy read. Shedding many of the characteristics of the bog-standard 'psychological thriller' Beautiful Liar flips back and forth between past and present, gradually revealing the path to the murder the reader encounters in the book's opening pages.

The first-person, present-tense narrative works well enough, mostly because the alternating between Joel and Erica's segments is startling due to the stark differences between the characters' personalities. So much so that perhaps using different POVs or tense may have been overkill.

Joel is skilfully manipulative, in the way that many controlling men and abusers can often be. Mullins has done an admirable job of conveying his presence, without ever resorting to moustache-twirling.

Despite the situation she is placed in, and my sympathies with Erica, as well as my support for her dispatching of her husband, I didn't always like her, which made me like the book more than I might have had I found a Mary-Sue.

I'm unsure whether this is Mullins' debut novel or not, it certainly doesn't read like one, rather it shows a writer who is well along in her development and demonstrating her skill.
A murder takes place, made to look like the perfect accident. A man trapped beneath his car, unable to move but his thoughts are clear she is not getting away with this!

There is no future for Joel when the car he is working on in the garage of the house he shares with his wife Erica, falls down on him. In his last minutes Joel thinks back on his marriage with Erica, their life together and the trouble he had to convince her. In his own words "the harder I pushed, the more it paid off, in the end. She soon came around to my way of thinking." It was a creepy sentence to read. For that we are cast back four years to Erica and Joel's first meeting.

Erica is surprised when Joel comes up to her is it love at first sight? From her experience with her former boyfriend Erica is eager not to make the same mistake twice and wants to take it slowly with Joel. However, Joel is smitten and determined Erica is going to be his and the sooner the better. Although he is charming we the readers are a bit disturbed by his thoughts and by the way he is trying to impose his lifestyle and his behaviour onto Erica.

Joel tells Erica that there is one thing he cannot stand lying. The book title Beautiful Liar is hanging in the air does Joel think Erica is lying to him? Or is it Rose who in Joel's eyes is desperate to hang on to her friendship with Erica and clings on to her to the point where it is obsessive? Then there is Lily, little beautiful and innocent Lily we have briefly met in the first chapters of the book. She is Erica and Joel's daughter and the reason Joel has to die, at least that is what we are told to believe the very moment the stage for Joel's murder is set "to look like a convincing accident."

I was impressed with Beautiful Liar. You would think it is quite obvious what happened, how the relationship progressed between Joel and Erica and yet you cannot grasp it fully until you have reached the end. Recently I have reviewed a book about manipulative behaviour and does not Joel seem a textbook manipulator? There is a dark undercurrent and a plot twist that changes everything.

This is a well written psychological thriller where we witness a murder in the present before the story catapults back four years to uncover the events leading to the ending we only now fully understand. From the alternating perspective of the different protagonists we see their side of the story and even after death Joel's vision and anger about him being killed is loudly voiced. This gives the reader a good insight into the main characters. A great read - I appreciate the Author's Note at the end.
A good read. It's strength for me was the alternating POVs and timeline that give the backstory to the powerful opening. That setup can sometimes be confusing but was well done here.

Erica and Rose were well developed and liked characters. Joel was the villain with no redeeming characteristics. He didn't seem to have any internal conflict about being a horrible person and everything he did seemed exaggerated. Maybe he was a psychopath and that was just the way things are. I'm not qualified to offer a diagnosis but he seemed pretty flat to me as a character.

What happened to Pippa? Why even put that storyline in the book if you're not really going to tell it? It would have been a stronger book by leaving it out completely. I'm thinking the same thing about Lily. She should have had a bigger part in the story or left out as well.

This was a dark and uncomfortable read but cleverly done.

Some formatting and copy edit problems in the kindle edition but nothing that made me grind my teeth.
